Resumption of tourism and lack of personnel, where to find young talents

carenza di personale

The hospitality and international tourism sector is experiencing an increase in bookings. However, large hotels, restaurants and luxury brands continue to be challenged by staff shortages, a shortage that risks affecting the customer experience. Recruitment is expected to remain one of the biggest issues facing the hospitality and tourism industry over the next five years, but so will retention. Here’s how two of the most prestigious training institutes respond

Good, indeed, excellent news for the tourism sector.

Indeed, the UNWTO’s World Tourism Barometer reported that international tourist arrivals reached 80% of pre-pandemic levels in the first quarter of 2023.

Also in June the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) revealed that the EU travel and tourism sector is expected to reach 98% of its 2019 peak.

While this is good news, large hotels, restaurants and luxury brands continue to be challenged by staff shortages.

What can be done to address this global staffing crisis, at a time when traveler numbers are on the upswing? To answer this question, the Future Skills Report, published by eHotelier in partnership with the Institute of Hospitality, sought to understand the skills needs of the industry.

Objective? Identify the nature of these skills also from the point of view of education, training and professional development. To address the staff shortage.

According to the report, the main goal for recruitment and retention is to attract people who have a range of skills and personal characteristics, rather than looking for people with specific professional and operational skills.

This is not to downplay the importance of those skills. Instead it suggests that some professional skills may be developed internally rather than being an essential prerequisite for employment.

Additionally, 86% of survey respondents say leadership training should be an essential or very important part of professional development.

Along these lines, Glion has recently partnered with ESSEC Business School to offer a flexible part-time Global Executive Master in Hospitality Leadership.

The course, which will start in November, is aimed at managers in the hotel sector. But also to those who have changed careers and who have already built a foundation of managerial experience.

A world of opportunities The luxury industry has also changed, and so has luxury management training. There are tremendous career opportunities in this profession.

The new degree course in Luxury Business will start in October. It will offer the perfect preparation for a top-level leadership career in the international luxury industry.

The Masters in Real Estate, Finance and Hotel Development at the Glion Institute of Higher Education in London is another example of a traditional hotel school preparing students for opportunities in related fields.

In addition Talent Connection is a project that offers the best candidates who enroll in Glion’s MSc International Hospitality Business, the possibility of obtaining expert coaching and guidance from industry partners in 3 key sectors.

That is, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts (luxury hospitality); Cushman & Wakefield (financial real estate services). And also Watchfinder & Co., specialist in used watches, part of the Richemont Group (luxury retail).

Staff shortage: Les Roches career day

Les Roches, a top 4 hospitality management school in the world, boasts enrollment growth of 65% over the past 10 years to nearly 2,000 students by 2023.

In June, the institute held its second virtual career day. 92% of companies present were looking for students for internship positions, 53% for training programs in supervisory positions.

Instead 74% for entry-level jobs and 47% for supervisory and senior roles.

With 86 companies in attendance and having completed nearly 1,800 interviews, the day concluded with a total of 441 students in attendance.

Four Seasons, Mandarin Oriental and the Marriott group with Ritz-Carlton, W or Edition are favorites for students to start their working life. Every year, around 300 major national and international brands come to campuses to meet students who could be their future employees.
