Lake Garda Veneto – Scaliger Castle of Malcesine

The light color of the main tower in contrast with the blue of the lake and the sky gives a strong visual impact to the castle of Malcesine, which among other things offers an incomparable panoramic view from the “Rivellino” platform and from the tower itself.

National monument since 1902, the Castle houses the Natural History Museum. In the “Sala Goethe”, which was previously a powder magazine built by the Austrians, the images of the lake and the Castle that Goethe himself had made during his trip to Italy are exhibited.

Peschiera del Garda

It is certainly worth a stop to visit the fortified city, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The sixteenth-century walls with a pentagonal plan guard the historic center, accessible through imposing doors.

Verona – Castelvecchio

Crossing the Castelvecchio Bridge you arrive at the Castle of the same name, one of the points of interest not to be missed in Verona: today it houses the Civic Museum, which houses sculptures, paintings, frescoes and a collection of weapons exhibited in the Torre del Mastio.

This fortress was built by Cangrande II della Scala but in recent times a statue of his predecessor, Cangrande I, who had offered hospitality to Dante at his court during the poet’s exile from Florence, was also placed inside.

Lessinia –  Tregnago Castle

This castle was also built by the Scaligeri for defensive purposes: it is located on a promontory and was designed to accommodate people and flocks inside. It was donated to the municipality of Tregnago by Cangrande della Scala in 1328.

Today only a few remains of the entire structure remain, dating back to the 11th-12th century. Of particular value is the Clock Tower which, although in ruins, retains a fresco from the 1400s by an unknown artist.

Soave –  Soave Castle

With the characteristic battlements that stands out among the hills of the vineyards, the Soave Castle is a fortification built for defensive purposes against the incursions of the Hungarians and boasts, from its walkways, a splendid view that reaches as far as the Lessini Mountains.

It probably originated in the 10th century and, over the course of history, it has passed under the control of several families, including the Visconti, in addition to the Della Scala. According to tradition, Dante Alighieri was among the illustrious visitors to this castle, during the period in which he was a guest of Cangrande della Scala.

Scaliger Castle of Villafranca di Verona

Begun in 1199, it was completed many years later: it was part of a wider defensive system that connected it to four other castles (Borghetto, Valeggio, Gherla and Nogarole Rocca), through a 13-kilometer wall, called the Serraglio, completed in 1345 and of which only a few traces remain today. It was abandoned after the second half of the 1400s and recovered by private individuals who bought and restored it a few centuries later. The clock that stands today on the main tower dates back to 1890, when the tower itself was rebuilt.
