Short-term rentals: the disappointment of Federalberghi Rome

The bill on short-term rentals does not satisfy Federalberghi Roma. In fact, the association is asking for more effective rules, sanctions and controls and for the Mayors to be empowered to govern the specificities of the territory

Disappointment on the part of Federalberghi Rome. In fact, the presentation of the bill on tourist rentals and short-term rentals is ineffective for the purpose of concretely combating the problem of unfair competition and abusive practices in our hospitality market.

What is needed? More decisive and binding rules and sanctions. And, moreover, the return to local administrations of the possibility of ad hoc rebuilding a fair and transparent system in their area of competence.

For the President of Federalberghi Rome, Giuseppe Roscioli, the bill must unfortunately, at present, be considered very disappointing: “Imposing stays of no less than 2 nights on short-term rentals has no impact in any way on the problem of fair competition: in a country where the average stay in hospitality establishments is 3.3 nights, indeed it sounds almost like a joke for those who carry out entrepreneurial activities according to the rules.

Even the proposed fines do not constitute a serious deterrent in these terms. In a city like Rome, which has been undergoing for years an impressive desertification of its historic center and beyond, we immediately need rules capable of giving citizens and students away from home a fair availability of housing.

With major events such as the Ryder Cup and the Jubilee just around the corner, there is an urgent need to define ad hoc rules to govern the specificities and manage a wave of flows that is expected to be extraordinary, also in consideration of the delay deficit of such a regulation that we already pay compared to many other large European and world capitals which, unlike us, have already established rules that are actually stringent and suitable for curbing the phenomenon”.
