The travel trends of 2023

Tendenze di viaggio

Authentic travel and working holidays and wellness are the travel trends of the year that has just begun. To say it is a research on trends carried out by Marriott Bonvoy. In 2023, travelers will spend more overall and thanks to hybrid work, millions of people will work on vacation to avoid taking holidays

The year has just begun but what will be the travel trends of this 2023? The answer comes from the research on 2023 travel trends carried out by Marriott Bonvoy. In fact, Marriott International‘s travel program analyzed the travel plans of 14,000 travelers in Europe and the Middle East.

In 2023, adult Italians will protect spending on holidays. Most of them (87%) plan to travel, plus over 4 in 10 (44%) plan to do so more than in 2022.

Italians in search of well-being and traditions
Wellness holidays will be the preferred holiday mode for Italians (63%) in 2023.

Of these, 53% say they have become more aware of their well-being, 40% say they need a break from everyday life. Finally, 47% do not want to return from a holiday more tired than when they left.

Traditional travel is also growing. Indeed many want to fully immerse themselves in a different culture, over three-fifths (63%) want to explore new destinations. On the other hand, half (50%) want to try the different local cuisines while travelling.

To better immerse themselves in the local culture, 13% plan to book an “extended holiday” of three weeks or more in the same destination.

Among those who will opt for a longer holiday, 27% say it will be the first time and the main reasons are the need to disconnect from the daily routine (55%) and the desire to live like the locals (37% ).

The hybrid work trend
A quarter of those who will opt for an extended vacation (25%) also underlined that the possibility of working remotely gives the opportunity to be able to take a longer vacation without having to ask for holidays for the entire period.

Five percent of Italians plan to take a “working holiday“, during which they will continue to work remotely, thus being able to visit new places without having to request holidays. An advantage underlined by 44% of the survey participants.

What travelers want
46% of Italian travelers expect to spend more on holidays in 2023 than in the previous year, while only 10% expect to spend less.

6% expect to spend a lot and stay in real luxury facilities, but Bed & Breakfasts (14%), apartments (12%) and the rental of houses or villas (10%) will also be preferred choices .

As a result, Italian consumers have high expectations of their holiday accommodation on aspects such as cleanliness (61%), location (55%) and tranquility (48%).

Possibly impacted by the pandemic, cleanliness is now second priority when it comes to accommodation. It is only surpassed by price (74%) which will no doubt continue to be a key factor.

Travel trends: the sustainability factor
Today, sustainability is a key factor for Italians when it comes to travel planning. In fact, 70% of respondents say that being green now has an impact on their travels.

More than a third (35%) say they are aware of the environmental impact of their holidays. While 35% say that environmental factors will define their travels and that they will only invest in companies that have a positive environmental impact.
