Visit California statement: 2019 Michelin Guide California star selections revealed

California has 118 new stars. Michelin’s release of the first edition of the 2019 Michelin Guide California included a total 657 restaurants, including 90 Michelin Star recipients.

The California guide is the first-ever statewide edition of the acclaimed global restaurant guide, which includes the globally recognized star designations, as well as Bib Gourmand and Plate recommendations.

Restaurants included in new guide hail from dozens of cities across California, including Sacramento, Monterey, Santa Monica, West Hollywood Santa Barbara and San Diego – in addition to the established San Francisco Bay Area and Wine Country regions of California.

Among California’s distinctions:

  • World’s first two-starred female chef, Japanese restaurant: Niki Nakayama, N/NAKA, Los Angeles
  • World’s only three-starred female chef: Dominique Crenn, Atelier Crenn/Bar Crenn, San Francisco
  • World’s only two-star Mexican restaurant: Californios (Val Cantu), San Francisco
  • World’s only two-star Indian restaurant: Campton Place (Srijith Gopinathan) San Francisco

All restaurants were reviewed and awarded according to Michelin’s proprietary and wholly independent inspection and selection process.

Visit California President & CEO Caroline Beteta issued the following statement commending the restaurants and chefs: “The stars awarded to the world-class chefs and restaurants across the state are a true testament to the diverse and creative culinary scene in California. From three-star restaurants to hole-in-the-wall taco shops, California’s cuisine is fueled by an abundance of freshness, a fearless attitude and an excitement for experimentation and innovation”.

And she also said: “The recognition and respect generated by earning a Michelin star is an unparalleled honor in the restaurant world, and every chef and restaurateur included in the inaugural California guide should be proud of dreaming big and feeding the and passions of Californians and visitors alike.”
