The technological level of Italian hotels: the VDA-Telkonet research

As part of its first report “Hospitality 2023: green technologies in hotels”, VDA-Telkonet conducted an international survey involving 100 Italian hotel facilities. Objective? Outlining the hospitality paradigm of the future

VDA-Telkonet, a global group that provides technological solutions for the hospitality market, has conducted a survey which shows that hoteliers invest in technology because they consider it a valid ally for optimizing the management of the structures.

The benefits it brings are 2: cost savings and guest satisfaction. But let’s see in more detail the results of the first report “Hospitality 2023: green technologies in hotels“.

The first question upstream of the survey gets straight to the point and indicates why hoteliers are installing new technologies in hotels. Improving the guest experience remains the main driver of the hotel offer but not at all costs.

For more than 7 out of 10 of the Italian hoteliers interviewed by VDA-Telkonet, energy saving is on the same level as guest satisfaction, today more and more aware. Expensive energy is an urgency for hoteliers. For about half of the respondents, revenues for the Christmas season this year will be below the average for the period due to the surge in energy costs, with a consequent increase in bookings of about 40%.

Green tech solutions, which allow consumption savings of 20-40%, are a useful tool for hoteliers who manage to recover their investment already in 2-3 years. 52% of respondents said they have already used public funds. Furthermore, 78% believe that they will use the funds from the PNRR to renovate the hotel’s technological system.

Green tech: optimization and sustainability
The keyword that emerges from the survey is optimization. The intention is to optimize internal operating processes as a whole to restore value to the work of employees by saving time and consumption. 78% of those interviewed consider themselves partially satisfied with the technological infrastructure of their hotel and would like to further increase the level to keep up.

If we broaden our gaze, immediately after the reduction of waste and attention to the use of recyclable materials, it is technology that makes a hotel sustainable (70%).

The most used green-tech solutions
The VDA-Telkonet survey identifies the 3 main technological solutions preferred by hoteliers to meet the priority objectives of energy saving and guest satisfaction. For 83% of participants, Property Management (PMS) is the most appreciated tool. In fact, it allows centralized management of reservations and the entire stay of guests from a single platform.

Immediately after we find the Energy Saving Systems (EMS) at 78% and the room management solutions (GRMS) at 43% which guests find in the form of wall plates and thermostats to control temperature and lights. Both solutions adopt intelligent measures based on room occupancy by activating or deactivating their functions based on the presence of the guest. T

The pitfalls of tech
Green tech solutions are highly appreciated by hoteliers. In fact, they allow you to manage consumption based on room occupancy, building exposure or the external humidity rate. However, the operational pitfalls that discourage its use also emerge from the survey. These include the difficulty of integrating the various technological solutions (73%) and the maintenance of the equipment, which cannot be managed in-house (43%).
