BIT Observatory: Italians’ travel budget is growing

Osservatorio BIT

The BIT Observatory conducted a meta analysis on some of the most recent sector data. It has also integrated it with a qualitative survey derived from constant dialogue with its stakeholders. Evidence indicates that in 2023
Italians are willing to devote more money to travel

According to the elaborations of the BIT Observatory on data from Compass (Mediobanca Group), in 2023 the budget that Italian families intend to allocate to travel will grow to almost two thousand euros (1,930, to be precise).

So with an increase of 482 euros compared to 2022. But more than a third of Italians (36%) are willing to exceed the threshold of 2,000 euros and reach up to 2,400.

For about half of the sample (49%) traveling is the best way to use the time available.

It is also interesting to note that a large proportion of travelers – up to two-thirds among the boomers, 66% – continue to rely on Travel Agencies to choose their vacation, alongside the online methods used above all by Millennials and Gen Z.

And if for about a quarter of the general sample the priority is relaxation (24%), for many travelers the watchword is “explore”, in particular for more than half of Gen Z (51%).

Tourism is slow
Also interesting is the study Open-air tourism: tourism that matters, by the MET – Master in Tourism Economics and Management at Bocconi University.

In fact, the research shows that between 2019 and 2021 in Italy the incidence of open-air accommodation (campsites and villages) went from 8 to 11% for arrivals and from 15 to 19% for overnight stays. Foreigners who represent half of the total (50%).

Among the preferred accommodations, mobile homes (51%) and bungalows (47%) stand out, but of particular interest is above all the glamping niche, the “glamor camping”.

The BIT Observatory notes that Italians above all want to experience the journey at a slow pace, enjoying every moment of the experience.

Furthermore, the interest of Italian travelers is once again turning towards more sustainable, responsible and aware travel even beyond national borders.
