Simmons, a leading company in the bedding sector, won a special mention at the Sustainability Award. This is the recognition that rewards the most sustainable players in the tourism and hospitality sector.
The Sustainability Oscar was awarded during the 46th edition of Hotel, the international fair for hotels and restaurants at Fiera Bolzano, held from 17 to 20 October.
The objective of the award is to enhance the most deserving companies on the green front and their often hidden research and development work. The Circular Design category (there are 4 categories of the award) reserved for products with a sustainable global design and which, according to the principles of the “closed loop”, are made with recycled and / or recyclable materials has seen the success of Simmons. in fact, the company was awarded for the new Natural Heritage line.
Natural Heritage: the green, safe and comfortable line
These are mattresses redesigned with a view to eco-design. Thanks to suitably processed and combined materials, they allow to satisfy comfort, safety and sustainability. In addition, the company has worked with great attention to the issue of recycling the product at the end of its life.
Darkly an equally complex aspect both from the hygienic point of view and from that of the materials. It is in this context that Simmons demonstrates all its capacity for innovation, providing for the use of recycled materials from the outset.
In fact, the steel wire of the springs comes from the recovery of iron scrap while for the padding a fire-resistant material has been developed by combining polyester obtained from recycled plastic bottles with a traditional and natural material such as virgin wool to absorb body moisture.
From the Reduce‘s point of view, the Natural Heritage range also uses smaller quantities of raw materials thanks to an overall review of the construction methods of each product. Finally, Simmons works in the Reuse groove, because the padded part, removable and replaceable, allows easy renewal of the mattress at the end of its life cycle, thus extending its overall duration.
A vision that increasingly goes in the direction of sustainable production also through a lower use of precious raw materials, a drastic reduction in waste and the use of energy produced from renewable sources.

The Jury of the Sustainability Award 2022 chaired by Klaus Egger (Special Charge for Sustainability) was composed of: Anna Scuttari (Senior Researcher, EURAC Center for Advanced Studies), Sonja Abrate (Deputy Director General Ökoinstitut Alto Adige), Michael Riedl (Deputy Director of the Fraunhofer Italy Institute), Aart Van Bezooijen (Professor of Material Driven Design at the Free University of Bolzano), Stefanie Prieth (Destination, IDM Südtirol – Alto Adige) and Thomas Mur (Director of the Bolzano Fair).
