Copenhagen’s new age of luxury

Copenhagen

Famed for its hygge lifestyle trend, classic mid-century design and pioneering Nordic cuisine, Copenhagen is seeing a marked rise in luxury-seeking international travellers

Four boutique hotels will set a new benchmark for Copenhagen in 2018 – and more new openings are on the horizon. Let’s get to know them!

Nobis Hotel Copenhagen
One of the city’s newest hotel openings, Nobis Hotel Copenhagen is a 5-starred offshoot of the luxury Nobis hotel collection in Stockholm. Located in a landmark Art Nouveau-inspired building from 1903, which originally served as the home of the Royal Danish Academy of Music, the hotel features interiors designed by star architect and Design Hotels influencer Gert Wingårdh. Indeed, Nobis Hotel Copenhagen is a member of Design Hotels. Among the offerings at Nobis Copenhagen are a grand suite and a penthouse suite with views to the neighbouring Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek museum and Tivoli Gardens.

Nobis Hotel Copenhagen has managed to scoop one of Denmark’s leading chefs to head its ground-floor restaurant, called Niels – ostensibly named after Denmark’s great composer Niels W. Gade. Chef de Cuisine Jeppe Foldager is the 2007 silver winner of the Bocuse d’Or Europe, and the restaurant has recently opened to rave reviews in the Danish culinary press. The cuisine is French-influenced and prepared using the best of Nordic produce. Nobis Hotel Copenhagen will also open an in-house wellness facility complete with Turkish bath and indoor pool.

Hotel Sanders
The property formerly known as Hotel Opera (Arp Hotels) will be relaunched as a new luxury boutique hotel. Located in a quiet side street facing the Royal Danish Theatre, Old Stage, the hotel is now headed by former Royal Danish Ballet dancer Alexander Kølpin whose is also the proprietor of two luxury seaside hotels north of the city, Helenekilde and Tisvildeleje.
The bespoke crafted interiors at Hotel Sanders are designed by Danish/British design studio Lind & Almond. Hotel Sanders will not be classed since it will not provide standard 5-starred amenities, such as wellness or fitness facilities, but the laidback luxury, craftsmanship and quality of the hotel is aimed at discerning travellers.

Hotel Herman K
Housed in a converted 1960s power substation, this 5-starred luxury hotel will feature 2 restaurants. The heritage-listed bronze-clad façade will be modified to accommodate a grand entrance to the sky-bridging, 12-metre tall lobby that will double as a bar. Operated by the Brøchner Group, the property is owned by the Kähler ceramic housewares company whose founder, Hermann Kähler, lends his name to the hotel. The hotel will join the Kähler company’s portfolio of flagship establishments that includes restaurant Kähler Spisesalon in Aarhus.
Several of the penthouse suites at Hotel Hermann K will offer private roof terraces.
The hotel faces the Magasin department store and is located just a few strides from the city’s main shopping street, Strøget.

Nimb Hotel
Originally opened in 2008 as one of the city’s first luxury boutique hotels, Nimb Hotel in Tivoli Gardens is currently being extended to offer 21 new luxury suites. The current deluxe rooms and suites in the original, Moorish-style edifice include accommodation facing the garden terrace. The new extension, designed by Pei Cobb Freed & Partners – creators of the Louvre glass pyramid in Paris – will additionally offer a spectacular roof terrace overlooking the gardens and city and will feature Copenhagen’s first heated outdoor rooftop pool exclusively reserved for Nimb hotel guests.
The new extension, called Tivoli Corner, will furthermore include a food court with 15 food stalls, a flagship Vapiano restaurant and an Illums Bolighus design store, all of which are not directly part of Nimb Hotel. However, the house of Nimb features no less than 4 restaurants, a wine bar, a cocktail lounge and a pastry boutique. Nimb Hotel also offers meeting & banquet facilities. Nimb is a member of Small Luxury Hotels and was ranked on the 2011 Condé Nast gold list.
